New opportunity for healthy meals for seniors in Lake City

Lake City-based Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) works to bring food to local families and now seniors through its Healthy HIP Packs Program, meal programs, and by advocating for our hungry neighbors.

Did you know that as you age your body’s needs change?  For instance, you need more protein to maintain muscles and to keep your immune system strong.  Your calcium and vitamin D needs also increase.  An easy and affordable way for older adults to access a healthy meal that incorporates all of these essential nutrients is at area senior centers.  But, as you may know, there is no senior center in Lake City.

This fall, HIP is partnering with Senior Services and the Lake City Community Center to change that.  Every Monday from 12 – 1 pm all seniors 60 and older are invited to join HIP at the Lake City Community Center for a nutritious and delicious meal for a suggested donation of $3.  No seniors 60 and older unable to donate will be denied a meal.

Delicious salmon cakes and roasted vegetables were on the menu for HIP’s first senior meal.

HIP’s senior meal started on November 4th and is already seeing growing numbers of seniors.  We hear from guests that they’ve enjoyed the setting, the socializing and of course the food.  Check out the upcoming menus for November below.  Activities will also be offered following each lunch.  Since this is the beginning of the program, we are looking for feedback and ideas on menus and activities to offer.

We hope to have all Lake City seniors join us for a meal.  To save your seat, contact Julia at (206) 457-2871 or americorps@hungerintervention.org.   Walk-ins are also always welcome.

Interested in volunteering? You might consider helping to cook at HIP’s kitchen, helping to set up or clean up at the Community Center.  Or consider volunteering to greet our lunch guests each week.  There’s a job for everyone!  Plus, all volunteers are invited to join us for lunch.  Contact Julia at the above number/email for more details.
