Lake City-based Hunger Intervention Program works to bring food to local families through its Healthy HIP Packs Program, free summer meals for kids, and by advocating for hungry families.

The smell of baking bread fills the air. Multiple pots and pans are bubbling on the stove, awaiting the giant bowls brimming with cut potatoes, carrots, and onions. HIP’s faithful volunteer team makes cooking a from-scratch meal for 70 look easy.

They come every Monday, even on holidays, to cook and serve a fabulous meal. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that the reception from the seniors attending the meals has been positive, to say the least.

HIP’s senior meal program started this past November. The attendance steadily rises as word-of-mouth makes its way through the senior community. The meal is a mere $3 suggested donation for seniors (those 60 or more years young). Guests under 60 are welcome to join the group for $6, which, considering the portion is still a great deal.

Often diners enjoy special activities with their meal like current events discussions, yoga, or live music. The Monday lunch is a great chance to meet new people, eat a delicious home-cooked meal, and break out of a routine. Please, help us spread the word, or better yet join us!
