Why volunteer at HIP versus other organizations?
I love that HIP’s focus is on having as big an impact as possible on the lives of the health of the communities it serves. As a volunteer at HIP, you join a community of staff, Board, volunteers, and supporters who get to see firsthand the effect that wholesome weekend food can have on a child, or a nutritious meal on a the life of a senior, and want to do as much as possible to make sure everyone who needs it has access to healthy food. Everyone involved with HIP has a chance to have an impact—whether through serving meals, prepping food, or serving on the Board.

What do you do as a HIP volunteer?
I recently joined the HIP Board of Directors and look forward to helping HIP continue to extend its reach and impact throughout the North Seattle community. I view my role as part of a support team to HIP’s staff and other volunteers, helping to make sure that the essential building blocks—funding, a facility, community support etc.—are in place so they can focus on providing healthy meals to children and families. Right now I’m on the Fundraising Committee, and it has been fun exploring new ways to broaden community support for HIP and secure new funds to fuel HIP’s programs.

What drew you to volunteer with HIP?
I was drawn to HIP because I love the fact that it does not settle for simply distributing food to people who need it; HIP makes sure that the food that goes out to the community is nutritious and supportive of children and family’s whole health. Nutrition and wellness are personal interests of mine, so I was excited to find an organization working to integrate nutrition with hunger alleviation here in Seattle. I also recognized that HIP is growing, and thought it would be exciting to support an organization that is finding ways to extend their reach and their impact throughout the community.

How are you able to use your talents in your volunteering?
I have a background in both nonprofit management and nutrition programming. I currently serve as a Grants and Evaluation Manager at another Seattle nonprofit where I work on grant-writing and reporting, contract management, program evaluation, and fundraising. I look forward to using those skills to help HIP raise funds, manage programs, and evaluate its success.
