Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign has created a program to involve college-aged Youth Ambassadors in the fight against childhood hunger by working with one of our community partners.  Hunger Intervention Program will host one Youth Ambassador to work on initiatives related to the alleviation of childhood hunger.

About Hunger Intervention Program

Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) is a nonprofit organization based in the Lake City neighborhood of North
Seattle. HIP’s mission is to increase food security for underserved populations in North King County through
nutritious meals, educational programs, and advocacy. If you are looking for experience working with a great
team and making a difference in the community, this is a great fit for you.

Position Summary

HIP’s Youth Ambassador will be a part of the summer meals team. 

  • They will work closely with the summer program lead and primarily be responsible for coordinating educational and recreational programs for HIP’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) meal sites (45%)
  • They will lead a team of interns for program activities (25%)
  • They will conduct outreach (15%)
  • They will assist with SFSP meal delivery and service as needed (5%)
  • And support other related tasks as assigned (10%).

Includes: 

  • Work with community partners to organize free classes and activities such as soccer, skateboarding, STEM activities, and dance for children at HIP’s SFSP meal sites
  • Oversee summer interns who will design and lead activities and help with other tasks related to SFSP as needed
  • Design and lead educational activities at SFSP meal sites
  • Maintain a public activity calendar and create promotional materials for activities
  • Depending on interests, draft social media posts, write blog posts, and help with other SFSP communications
  • Act as a backup meal deliverer and server in the event of staff shortages
  • Miscellaneous/Administrative tasks including No Kid Hungry assignments

The Youth Ambassador will report to a national No Kid Hungry staff member, and a Hunger Intervention Program member. The Ambassador will participate in weekly conference calls, complete a weekly report, and attend online training sessions throughout their term.  

Requirements

All applicants must be current undergraduate students or enrolled in an undergraduate program.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A willingness to work on all kinds of projects
  • Interest in hunger issues
  • Commitment to working with diverse communities
  • Reliability, responsibility, and a good work ethic
  • Good customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Familiarity with social media 
  • Reliable access to a vehicle

COVID-19 Statement

HIP follows all local and federal health and safety regulations with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being
a food service provider, an essential service during the pandemic, this is an in-person position that requires
interacting with community members. All needed PPEs are provided, and everyone must be fully vaccinated
to work.

Compensation

The Youth Ambassador will receive a stipend of $6,000 from No Kid Hungry plus a stipend of $4,000 from Hunger Intervention Program, for a total of $10,000 for 360 hours over 10 weeks, with a one-week paid vacation. The Youth Ambassador will have the opportunity to extend their internship through September 1st, with hourly compensation.
