START/END DATE:

Facilitate community connections by doing outreach in local communities, coordinate volunteers, help with various communications, including volunteer newsletters and social media, and support HIP events.
Location: 98125, Seattle
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
United Way of King County’s vision is to build a community where people have homes, students graduate, and families are financially stable. As part of our work to end poverty, we are committed to ensuring that all children have access to healthy food in the places where they live, learn, and play.
The mission of the Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) is to increase food security for individuals in North King County through nutritious meals, educational programs, and advocacy.
Help facilitate community connections by doing outreach in local communities, coordinating volunteers, and organizing various HIP events. This position will also help with external communications to keep all stakeholders engaged through newsletters and social media. HIP operates in a Seattle neighborhood where many residents face economic challenges and barriers to resources. The most recent census identifies the Lake City and Northgate neighborhoods, where most of HIP’s program participants reside, as areas with a diverse population.
This VISTA project fights poverty by connecting individuals with supplemental food resources and nutrition education. This helps families stretch their budgets while maintaining access to nutritious meals. Additionally, this project helps build community by creating spaces for all residents to gather, celebrate, and share resources.
MEMBER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate volunteers by recruiting, orienting, assigning projects, and fostering engagement through one-on-one interactions, monthly newsletters, and social media.
- Lead various outreach events and community celebrations that HIP participates in, including HIP’s Community Appreciation Event, Community Kitchens, End-of-Summer Festival, Pumpkin Palooza, and Winter Fest. These outreach events will increase awareness of HIP’s services and build capacity to reach more individuals in need.
- Coordinate recreational and educational events for children, youth, and parents throughout the summer months in collaboration with HIP’s summer meals team. These activities will increase the participation of kids and families in HIP’s summer meals program, increase food security, and provide expanded access to educational activities to reduce learning loss during the summer months for children from families facing financial hardship.
