DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, HIP celebrated Filipino-American History Month with a Filipino-style Kamayan\, led by our Shelter Meals Chef\, Rachel Mina. Due to its amazing turnout\, we decided to bring back Chef Rachel and her entire family this March for another Kamayan celebration! Kamayan is a colorful and communal feast featuring grilled meats\, vegetables\, and sides served traditionally on banana leaves. The evening will include dinner\, dessert\, karaoke\, and more. All proceeds will support HIP’s mission to increase food security in our community. \nDATE: March 21\, 2025\nTIME: Doors open at 5:30 PM\, Dinner starts at 6 PM\, Event ends 7:30 PM\nLOCATION: Hunger Intervention Program\n3841 NE 123rd St\nSeattle\, WA 98125 \n \n\n \nMEET THE CHEF\nRachel Mina (she/her) was born in the Philippines\, immigrated to the Pacific Northwest at the age of 5\, and grew up in the White Center area. After spending a decade working in healthcare administration\, Rachel found her love for food justice through volunteer work. She has since worked at FareStart’s School Meals & Shelter Meals program in Seattle and helped open Librairie Gourmande\, a culinary event/training space in Grays Harbor. Currently\, she is the program coordinator for HIP’s Shelter Meals program\, providing dinners and breakfasts to residents of The Oaks Enhanced Shelter and Kenmore Senior Women’s Shelter every week. Her interests include playing and watching basketball\, visiting museums in small towns\, and taking the ferry on a nice day. \n\nDETAILS\nBegin your evening with a drink and some tsitsirya (Filipino snacks). Then we will transition to a Kamayan-style feast\, including a meal of classic dishes* from the Philipines\, like lechon liempo (roast pork)\, lumpiang shanghai (Filipino-style egg roll)\, atchara (pickled papaya slaw)\, and much much more. DESCRIPTION:  \n\nDate: Friday\, April 5th\nTime: 6:00 – 8:00pm\nLocation: Hunger Intervention Program\n3841 NE 123rd St\nSeattle\, WA 98125 \nDETAILS\nThe evening will begin with drinks (beer\, wine\, soju\, and N/A options)\, appetizers (featuring KFC-style fried mushrooms with gochujang sauce\, assorted small snacks\, and tteokbokki)\, and a time to get acquainted with the group. After that\, we will split into groups of 2 or 4 and start the cooking demonstration portion of the event. The demo will begin with a pantry tasting. After this\, the prep work will begin with knife skills and mise en place. Each station will have its own burner and Dutch oven or saute pan. The Kimchi JJigae will be prepared first. Then\, other banchan demos will be completed while the Kimchi JJigae boils down. After that\, the meal will be completed\, and people can take a short break while the pork belly is finished in the kitchen. Then…..the feast begins! \nPURCHASE TICKETS\nSold Out \nAll profits from this event will directly support HIP’s programs\, which provide fresh meals\, nutrition education\, and more to vulnerable populations in our community. He can completely nerd out over culinary anthropology and talk about food and food science for hours with anyone willing to listen. When not in the kitchen\, you can find him playing hockey or running in different neighborhoods of Seattle. \n\n\n\n					My Journey to Korean Food\nI was adopted from Korea\, raised in New Jersey in an American Italian household\, and trained at the French Culinary Institute. This last year\, I returned to Seoul 37 years later and found myself learning so much.
