SUMMARY:Kamayan at HIP
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, HIP celebrated Filipino-American History Month with a Filipino-style Kamayan\, led by our Shelter Meals Chef\, Rachel Mina. Due to its amazing turnout\, we decided to bring back Chef Rachel and her entire family this March for another Kamayan celebration! Kamayan is a colorful and communal feast featuring grilled meats\, vegetables\, and sides served traditionally on banana leaves. The evening will include dinner\, dessert\, karaoke\, and more. All proceeds will support HIP’s mission to increase food security in our community. \nDATE: March 21\, 2025\nTIME: Doors open at 5:30 PM\, Dinner starts at 6 PM\, Event ends 7:30 PM\nLOCATION: Hunger Intervention Program\n3841 NE 123rd St\nSeattle\, WA 98125 \n \n\n \nMEET THE CHEF\nRachel Mina (she/her) was born in the Philippines\, immigrated to the Pacific Northwest at the age of 5\, and grew up in the White Center area. After spending a decade working in healthcare administration\, Rachel found her love for food justice through volunteer work. She has since worked at FareStart’s School Meals & Shelter Meals program in Seattle and helped open Librairie Gourmande\, a culinary event/training space in Grays Harbor. Currently\, she is the program coordinator for HIP’s Shelter Meals program\, providing dinners and breakfasts to residents of The Oaks Enhanced Shelter and Kenmore Senior Women’s Shelter every week. Her interests include playing and watching basketball\, visiting museums in small towns\, and taking the ferry on a nice day. \n\nDETAILS\nBegin your evening with a drink and some tsitsirya (Filipino snacks). Then we will transition to a Kamayan-style feast\, including a meal of classic dishes* from the Philipines\, like lechon liempo (roast pork)\, lumpiang shanghai (Filipino-style egg roll)\, atchara (pickled papaya slaw)\, and much much more. Cleanse your palate with delicious confections featuring traditional Filipino flavors like pandan\, coconut\, and ube. End off the night in style with a karaoke night (no singing experience required)! \n*Menu is subject to change. Includes shellfish.
