DESCRIPTION:October is Filipino American History Month! Help us celebrate with a Filipino-style Kamayan\, prepared by Shelter Meals Chef Rachel. Kamayan is a colorful and communal feast featuring grilled meats\, vegetables\, and sides served traditionally on banana leaves. For those who would like to attend the event but find the cost to be a barrier\, please email info@hungerintervention.org and we will do our best to accommodate a low-cost ticket. \n\nMEET THE CHEF\nRachel Mina (she/her) was born in the Philippines\, immigrated to the Pacific Northwest at the age of 5\, and grew up in the White Center area. After spending a decade working in healthcare admin\, Rachel found her love for food justice through volunteer work. She has since worked at FareStart’s School Meals & Shelter Meals program in Seattle and helped open Librairie Gourmande\, a culinary event/training space\, in Grays Harbor. Currently\, she is the program coordinator for HIP’s Shelter Meals program\, providing dinners and breakfasts to residents of The Oaks Enhanced Shelter seven days a week. Her interests include both playing and watching basketball\, visiting museums in small towns\, and taking the ferry on a nice day. \n\nDETAILS\nBegin your evening with a drink and some tsitsirya (Filipino snacks). Then\, get up close and personal with Filipino cuisine by attending a short workshop on one of three traditional dishes (lumpia\, turon\, or ube ice cream). Finally\, sit down to the Kamayan feast\, which will feature Filipino-style grilled meats & seafood\, pancit\, lumpia\, garlic rice\, and an assortments of vegetables and dipping sauces. Finish off the evening with fresh-cut tropical fruit\, turon (fried caramel banana egg rolls)\, cassava cake\, and ube ice cream. \n*Food items are subject to change*
