Advocacy Alert! Save School Breakfast

We want our children to start their day right, with a healthy breakfast, so that they can learn in school instead of getting distracted with grumbling stomach. It’s a matter of equity. All children, WA state breakfas report cardirrespective of their economic or social conditions, should have the same opportunities to reach their full potential.

The good news is that the Washington State House has passed a bill (HB 1508) that supports thousands of children who are low-income and food-insecure. This bill has strong bi-partisan support and passed the house with 90-8 votes! This bill includes “Breakfast After the Bell,” a program which gives kids in high-need schools food where and when it matters. Schools where at least 70% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals would be required to offer breakfast after the start of the school day.

The not so good news: the bill is only half-way there. Now we need the Senate to move this bill and pass it. We urgently need your support to make this bill a reality. Please contact your State senator and voice your support for breakfast in schools so children can start their day ready to learn.

Washington state ranks a dismal 45 out of 50 states when it comes to making sure low-income students participate in breakfast and lunch programs. We can surely do better for our future generation.
