Tell Congress: #HandsOffSNAP

The proposed Farm Bill will take food away from hard working families and children. We need you to speak up against these devastating cuts now.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), more commonly know as food stamps, has been one of the most effective anti-hunger and anti-poverty programs for many decades. Unfortunately, it has also been a target for some of our legislators and other moneyed interests who are bent on weakening this successful and critical program.

The US House released its draft Farm Bill recently. The current draft will take food away from hard working families and individuals who are facing the most significant barriers to work. It’ll let more children go hungry at schools with less enrollment in the free/reduced price school meal program. It’ll punish people who are working but for whom work is not available year-round. In essence, this Farm Bill, if passed, will make the hunger crisis much worse for our communities. We’ll see longer lines at our food banks and meal programs, which are already struggling to put up with the demand. Read more about the changes in the Farm Bill in this blog post from our partner, Northwest Harvest.

There are many things you can do to resist these cuts. Now more than ever, we need you to speak up. Send a message to your representative. Check out the SNAP Advocacy Toolkit and “what you can do” blog post from Northwest Harvest and make your story heard. We need to flood Congressional offices with our stories and our messages to keep their #HandsOffSNAP.
