Volunteer Spotlight: Samantha, Fiona, & Chloe

JacqueJacque is one of our star AmeriCorps member who worked at HIP last summer as an intern from United Way, and she loved it so much that she decided to come back again this year! She interviewed two volunteers, Fiona and Samantha, at her Summer Meals site and wrote up this piece for us.

Working with the Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) in the summer means getting to know families around the community, and consistently partnering up with generous local businesses on a regular basis. One of the major essentials to running a fun, safe, and successful summer meals program is the help we get from volunteers in the kitchen and on our meal sites. It’s great to see individuals who want to give time during their summer, especially with the extraordinary hot weather we’ve been getting, but it’s even better to see families who come to meal sites to help pass out meals and get first-hand experience with how meal sites function. Some wonderful, regular volunteers I’ve had the pleasure of working with are Samantha, and her two daughters, Fiona and Chloe. To get a better idea of summer meals, I conducted an interview to give people an idea of what it’s like to work with HIP from a volunteer’s perspective.

Q: How long have you volunteered with HIP? This is our first year.

Q: How did you hear about HIP? Found it on the Nathan Hale website for things kids can do in the summer for community service.

Q: What site(s) have you worked at? Just Lake City Community Center

Q: What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen at this site? People leaving food around…you know teenagers.

Q: What food (that we serve) looks the best? Applesauce…everything. The vegetables always look fresh and the little pastas look the most appetizing.

Q: What do you do at your meal site? Food, food, food. Play with kids, refill food, paint faces.

Q: What’s your favorite part about working with the summer meals program? The kids – seeing all the kids from the community, and they’re really cute. It’s nice to see the families out enjoying the park in the city.

Q: Favorite cold food? Pasta salads, anything salad-wise (Fiona). I like a good turkey and cheese sandwich…those turkey bites looked good (Samantha).

Q: What’s something you’d like to see at the meal sites? Bubbles and balloons!

Q: Anything else you’d like to add? “Training” was good.

Thank you for volunteering with HIP Samantha, Fiona, and Chloe!
