Hello hello!
This is Phoenica here, the new AmeriCorps member at this wonderful place known was HIP. You’re probably wondering how to pronounce the name, so I’ll give you a tip: my name is “Phoenix” (my hometown) and “America” squished together. No worries if you get it wrong; I actually encourage creative interpretations 😉 I’ve only been at HIP for a few days, and in the Northwest for a few months, but I already feel at home. I’m surprised everyday by your strong sense of community and the passion of the staff and volunteers. Thank you all for your warm welcome so far!
A bit about me — I grew up in Arizona, but call Durham, NC home. I’ve spent the last four years there, falling in love with the community around Duke University, where I just graduated from this past May. There, I studied environmental science, with focus in ecology and food studies. When I’m not in the kitchen whipping up trouble, I’m making music, serving up tasty coffee at Mighty-O Donuts (come say hi!), exploring through photography, and being completely enchanted by the Pacific Northwest charm. I’m a lover of all things food, and believe that food is more than sustenance; it is health, self-empowerment, and community. I am enthusiastic to be a part of the HIP team to make this idea a reality for our community!
