Meal Program Assistant

Part-time (16 hours per week) contract position

Seattle, Washington

Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) is a nonprofit organization based in the Lake City neighborhood with the mission to increase food security for underserved populations in North King County through nutritious meals, educational programs, and advocacy. If you are a compassionate individual looking for experience in working with youth, menu planning, and non-profit meal service this is an excellent position for you. This is a part-time, contract position that would require 16 hours per week from June 13th to August 26th.

Position Overview

This individual will work with HIP’s Meal Program Manager to coordinate the operations of HIP’s summer meals program. The assistant will be trained to create menus that satisfy program requirements, manage weekly food ordering, prepare for prep shifts, and assist in managing prep volunteers. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with a passion for feeding people and the ability to communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Meal Program Manager to plan menus and production sheets
  • Assist with inventory and ordering of food
  • Support the preparation of meals
  • Ensure the safe handling of food by complying with local health and safety standards
  • Create a dynamic and welcoming environment for volunteers to work
  • Drive HIP van as needed to deliver food and supplies
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Creativity in problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team
  • Passion for working with diverse clients, staff and volunteers
  • Experience working in food service preferred
  • Experience in meal production in a commercial kitchen desired, but not required
  • Willingness to learn and comply with food safety and sanitation rules
  • Passionate about food and addressing issues of hunger
  • Flexible, resourceful, and adaptable to unexpected situations
  • Excellent oral and written skills and ease in talking to the public

Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, reach, bend, stand or kneel repeatedly
  • Must pass the Washington State Patrol background check
  • Must have current Driver’s License, clean driving record, and current liability insurance
  • Must have or obtain a current Washington State Food Worker Card
  • Must have basic computer proficiency including MS Word and Excel

Compensation

This is a contract position that pays $15/hour.
