For December 2023, Allie was our Volunteer Spotlight! Allie has been volunteering with HIP for almost three years and being a retired teacher who enjoys cooking, Allie is right at home helping out with our programs and activities. Allie helps with many programs, doing prep with David, Rachel, and Emebet on various days throughout the week. Let’s rewind and go back to the start of Allie’s HIP journey.
Allie discovered HIP through assisting with meals for the Oakes shelter through her church. Along with her friend Sue, she looked for volunteer work. Allie found HIP because it sounded like something they would enjoy, and felt they were contributing to the needs of the unhoused in their community. A fun memory from Allie’s early volunteering days was the first time she used the commercial mixer to make cookies with Sue. The two of them forgot to put a towel over the mixer when pouring in flour, and a flour cloud covered the oven, floor, and counter. They got more proficient with time, but the memory remains.
Allie feels like volunteering with HIP has taken away her stress from the pandemic. Also, it provides some structure while allowing her and Sue to get involved with groups working with homelessness. Allie continues volunteering with HIP due to the excellent staff of dedicated individuals. She appreciates the staff for how they interact with volunteers or for the humor and relief they bring to the workplace.
