Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Axlrose Balagtas

Every month, we are excited to celebrate one of our volunteers. For February 2024, we wanted to highlight the story of Axlrose. She learned about HIP through Seattle University and was placed at HIP as an intern. However, she continued to volunteer at HIP even after finishing all of her classes. Axlrose is aligned with the mission and vision of HIP, believing that everyone deserves access to a wholesome meal. She contributes her time and efforts to support the initiatives that work towards our goals at HIP and appreciates how HIP combines nutritious meals with education and advocacy. These various pieces come together to align with her belief in comprehensive solutions that address the root causes of food insecurity.

She has also appreciated the welcoming people at HIP. Her favorite thing is that there are multiple opportunities for volunteering. You can do more than just behind-the-scenes prep. She has volunteered with both shelter meals and senior meal serving, giving her a good range of experiences. She volunteers with another church where they make meals and distribute them directly to those in need in downtown Seattle. We hope she can continue to volunteer with us and try out different opportunities.

Axlrose’s most memorable moment so far was her first time volunteering. She said “The atmosphere was filled with positivity, and everyone went out of their way to make me feel welcome. When I first came into the kitchen I remember scaring JP, and it was so funny. It was also my first time meeting him.” We hope we can have more fun scares and memories with Axlrose.

As the first spotlight of the year, we would like to highlight Nick and his immeasurable contribution to our Senior Community Meal program! Nick has helped with check-in for meal service for about 8 years.

Nick found out about HIP through Jerry Berger, one of the founders of HIP, at his local church. What began as a new volunteering experience became a routine part of Nick’s life as a retiree. “Volunteering keeps me busy and is one way for me to socialize.”

As a front-facing volunteer, Nick’s unique position allows him to engage with the people around him as well as observe budding relationships grow. He likes seeing “how seniors grow in their [inter]actions with each other.” and appreciates the camaraderie he sees between HIP staff and volunteers. He also found a physical benefit by getting in some exercise while putting up and taking down tables.

We hope his story will inspire others to volunteer in their communities. In his own words: “Yes I would recommend volunteering at HIP for those that have the time, are looking for a way to help the community, or just need something to do while looking for a job. They could be like me, retired and need to keep busy.”

As a pivotal part of the Senior Meals crew, we are so happy to see Nick’s familiar face every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Thank you Nick for all that you do!
