Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Patty

It’s time for another volunteer spotlight, and this month we’re getting to know Shelter Meals volunteer, Patty. Patty began volunteering with HIP regularly when her daughter, Molly, joined HIP’s board in 2021. An avid cook, Patty was excited to use her skills in the kitchen to give back.

Patty started cooking as a child, when she would occasionally make dinner for her family of 11! One of the first things she made for her family was parmesan chicken, and she hasn’t stopped cooking since. With her years of experience, Patty likes it when she gets to work on technical kitchen tasks at HIP, such as making sauces or baking.

Patty fits right in at HIP. “I LOVE to cook, and I love to be around food…I love to be a part of a group that wants to feed people,” she explains. Like many of our prep volunteers, she appreciates the sense of camaraderie that you can find in the HIP kitchen each time you volunteer. When she came to HIP she was impressed with the level of respect both between staff and volunteers inside the kitchen, and towards the people who HIP serves.

Patty’s passion for food is only one of her many interests. Her and her husband both worked for many years as medical technologists, and are outdoor enthusiasts who love to hike and camp throughout the country. Now retired, she stays busy thanks to her two grandsons. Everything that Patty prepares for The Oaks shelter is made with love, and we are so grateful to have her as part of the team.
